BioWare Explains Why Dragon Age- The Veilguard Is Not Open World

BioWare recently released an extended gameplay look at Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and something fans immediately noticed was the game’s more linear mission structure. Game director Corinne Busche spoke to IGN recently about why a linear setup was in the best interest of the game.

“Yeah, so it is a mission-based game. Everything is hand-touched, hand-crafted, very highly curated,” Busche said. “We believe that’s how we get the best narrative experience, the best moment-to-moment experience.”

While The Veilguard is a mission-based, linear game, there are parts of the game that have more open sequences that offer players a greater sense of freedom of exploration, Busche said.

“Alternate branching paths, mysteries, secrets, optional content you’re going to find and solve. So it does open up, but it is a mission-based, highly curated game,” the developer said.

The Veilguard, which was previously known as Dreadwolf, launches later this year on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is the first new entry in the series since the highly acclaimed Dragon Age: Inquisition in 2014.
